How many hours does it take for the BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion?

You should figure between 3-4 hours times the shops labor rate, but this can vary greatly depending on the shop. This kit comes with everything you need to convert the front and rear of a 2000-2005 BMW X5.

BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion Kit
When installing a BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion Kit on ANY vehicle be sure to follow all safety procedures. Make sure that when you lift your vehicle, that you're using a sturdy and dependable jack and jack stands and that the car is parked on a flat and level surface. Failure to do so can result in the vehicle sliding off it's supports and onto you! Make sure you have or can obtain all the tools required beforehand. A list of the tools needed is below, but gloves and especially eye protection should be standard equipment on any job.

Be sure to follow BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion Kit instructions in the specified order, as they are laid out in a particular order for a reason. Improper installation and even installation in the incorrect order can cause damage to these parts that are NOT covered under your warranty! Always take precaution not to exceed the gross vehicle weight rating recommended by the manufacturer.

Tools Required for BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion:
Metric Socket Set
Floor Jack or Vehicle lift
Jack Stands
Screw Drivers(Phillips and Flathead)
Wire Cutter/Stripper/Crimping Tool
Needle Nose Pliers
Pry Bar
Basic Tools

FRONT STRUT REMOVAL GUIDE:
* Lift vehicle with the suspension fully extended safely and securely on a lift or jack stands.
* Remove tires front and rear.
* Raise hood for access to top mounting bolts.
* Locate brake line that attached to the strut.
* Pop clip that holds it in place and remove the brake line from the housing.
* Find sway bar link attached to the strut.
* Using impact gun or wrench, remove sway bar link from its housing on the strut.
* Using impact gun or wrench on both sides, remove top bolt and tap out with mallet or hammer.
* Use the same process to remove both top and bottom bolt.
* Once both bolts are removed, the complete hub assembly will fall.
* Be sure the brake line is disconnected from strut and sway bar link is removed.
* Remove washer fluid reservoir with 10mm socket.
* Take a 13mm socket and remove mounting stud bolts.
* Once all three are removed, be sure to catch strut from dropping.
* Once bag has dropped the air line should be visible.
* Use the correct wrench and remove air line from the strut.
* Then strut can be removed from strut housing.

Repeat steps for the other side of the vehicle.

Front strut removal is complete.

FRONT BMW X5 AIR SUSPENSION CONVERSION KIT INSTALLATION:
* Take pre-assembled struts and place top mounts correctly in three holes in the strut housing.
* Once strut is aligned properly in strut housing, take nuts and BY HAND, place them on mounting studs.
* Once you have placed all three on, hand tighten.
* Then go ahead and reinstall the washer fluid reservoir.
* Using a stand-up jack, apply pressure to the hub by pushing upward to align holes on strut with mounting holes on the hub assembly.
* Once bottom and top bolts are securely in place, tighten down with impact gun or wrenches.
* Then, at the bottom of the strut, locate your sway bar link and place back in the housing.
* Tighten down using impact or wrenches until tight.
* Place brake line back in its housing.
Using same clip, reinstall clip holding brake line in place.

Repeat steps for the other side of the vehicle.

REAR STRUT REMOVAL:
* Pull up the carpet in the storage compartment in the rear of the car.
* Remove spare tire cover panel and all plastic panels.
* Remove yellow air feed to the air canister.
* Cut large black air line that goes from canister to the rear air bag.
* Remove black air canister.
* Locate the rear air bags in the rear.
* Then find the rear shocks and unbolt the bottom of both rear shocks and let hang out of the way.
* Locate the clip that is holding the bottom of the air bag into its mounting position.
* Using needle nose pliers, remove the clip in the lower part of the air bag.
* Pull out the air bag.
* Using a jack, push up on the rear support arm and remove the bolt from the bottom of the shock assembly.
* Locate the sway bar linkage and remove the nut, then pull the sway bar linkage out, toward the front of the car.
* Locate the track arms assembly, which is the one closer to the front of the car.
* Remove track arms nut with a 16mm wrench and pull track arms assembly out of your way.
* Locate rear ride height sensor, remove the nut from the sensor and push out of your way.

Repeat steps for the other side of the vehicle.

REAR BMW X5 AIR SUSPENSION CONVERSION INSTALLATION:
* Disassemble the rear bottom plate to where the only thing you have been a bolt, big washer and bushing on the bolt.
* Lube bushing and insert bolt through the big hole on control arm where the air bag came out of to a tight fit.
* Then place your spacer on the bolt to cover the hole. Then add the washer nut and bolt. Tighten until tight with impact gun or wrench.
*Place rubber spring seat around spacer, so that there's no metal on metal rubbing.
* Disassemble rear top plate completely to where all parts are away from each other.
* Take countersunk spacer and place in the hole upwards on the bottom of the air bag tower.
* Take your bolt and one washer and run through the hole on the top side, all the way through the spacer.
* Add your other washer with lock washer and nut and tighten until secure.
* Using a pry bar, pry down as much as needed to place spring properly on seats.
* Be sure to place open, where coils are further separated downward to the rear bottom plate.
* Be sure to put spring correctly around correct seats and turn spring to where it sits properly on spring seats.
* Once the BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion Kit is correctly installed, go back and check to make sure spring is sitting properly on the spring seats. (if it's not sitting in the seat properly, it WILL cause noises)
* Reinstall ride height sensor, sway bar, forward track arm, shock, and all interior pieces.

Repeat steps for the other side of the vehicle.

* Reinstall all wheels and torque lug nuts to factory recommended torque specs.
* Lower vehicle.
Front and Rear BMW X5 Air Suspension Conversion Kit is now complete.


We highly recommend having a four wheel alignment done after a week or so
(after the springs settle)

What a Great Idea!!! March 31, 2016

When the shop told me it would take over $4,000 to fix it, my knee-jerk reaction was to scrap it! Who in the right mind would buy a 15 year old car that needs over $4k in repairs? I sure wouldn't. Thank you so much for making a product so I can afford to keep my X5. At less than half the price of the air, it sure makes me feel better on those trips.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE AIR RIDE!!!!! I spent more money than I want to admit keeping the air ride money pit going for 2 years before I threw in the towel. If I had known how good the ride was with springs, I would have done this long, long ago.

I just want to tell everyone what a great kit this is for a BMX X5. It installed really easy, thanks to the instructions provided and rides great. The best thing is, I'll never have to spend another dime on the air suspension ever again! You guys are awesome!
