STAGES OF AN AIR SUSPENSION LEAK

Starline DividerStarline Divider

Stage 1 Leak

Early in the stages of a leak, an air spring will only leak while being driven. This is because the cracks of the air bladder will be worked(open& close, open & close, etc.) while being driven.

In this 1st stage, the vehicle will normally be driven 6-8 months without the driver/owner even realizing there's a problem. During this time, the compressor and the rest of the system will have to work 2-10 times more than normal because it's constantly filling up the leaking air spring. During this time, the compressor is not only having to run way more than it was designed, it is also producing way more moisture than it normally would which can quickly saturate even a new dryer. You will usually experience an occasional "check suspension" message during this stage and occurring more frequently as time goes on.
In the later part of this stage, you may encounter times when the vehicle will lower randomly in colder weather. This is because the air bladder is harder, less pliable and less able to seal itself.

NOTES:
#1) For the vehicles that are known to have moisture problems, like Town Cars, Mark VIII's, Windstars and late model Expeditions & Navigators.....this makes a bad thing worse! It's like an air compressor is your garage. If you never drain the tank, in time so much water will build up, that you'll have all kinds of problems later on. It's the same thing with an air suspension system only there's no way to "drain" the built up moisture in the system. This in turn is extremely hard on compressors, as they are designed to run bone dry! If they have to deal with water very long, they will not last long. It doesn't matter if it's a New $600 Ford compressor or a $150 rebuilt compressor, moisture will kill one.......and quicker than anything else!

#2) In the later part of this 1st stage, you may encounter times when the vehicle will lower in colder weather. This is because the air bladder is harder the colder it gets, less pliable and less able to seal itself.

Stage 2 Leak
Only in Stage 2 of a leak, will you encounter air suspension lowering problems while the vehicle is sitting still. In this stage, you'll start having days where it goes down all the way in a shorter timespan, like getting gas or while grocery shopping.

Keep in mind that by the time stage 2 occurs, the system has already been beat to death and is damaged somewhat. Most people think the problem has just started because they just started seeing the vehicle go down. They usually find out later on, the hard way, that the system is already "on the ropes" so to speak. This is why you can almost guarantee that someone buying air springs now, will be looking for a replacement compressor/dryer within approx. 6 months or so!
During this stage, you may start to get a "check suspension" message pop up every once in awhile while driving. This is because either the system can't keep up with the leak....in the allotted timeframe, something has been damaged and can't perform it's job like it's suppose to......or a combination of both!

NOTES:
In the later part of this 2nd stage, you may encounter times when the vehicle will lower randomly in colder weather. This is because the air bladder is harder the colder it gets, less pliable and less able to seal itself. In this stage, you will see the vehicle going down more & more in cold weather.

Stage 3 Leak
In the 3rd stage of a leak, if the compressor and the rest of the system lasts that long, you will notice the vehicle going down every night
and just about every time the vehicle is shut down. The "check suspension" message will be on more times than not. Depending on the weather, there maybe days it's leaking so bad that it can't pump itself up, no matter what. While other days(warmer days), you maybe able to drive it some.

NOTES:
The majority of the time, a major part will fail before this stage occurs!

Stage 4 Leak
In the 4th stage of a leak, the compressor and the rest of the system has pretty much done all it can do. The vehicle is so low, it takes a skilled wrecker driver to even get it on a flatbed.
